Federal Criminal Investigation

Federal criminal investigations can be significantly different from state criminal investigations. In state investigations, a suspect is often arrested before the case has been thoroughly investigated. There are also often significant differences between state and federal offences in the use of the Grand Jury. When federal prosecutors brings charges, they have often already thoroughly investigated the matter. Agencies involved in federal criminal investigation include:

Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)
Criminal Division of the IRS (CID)
Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF)
United States Postal Service (Postal Inspector)
Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)
Department of Homeland Security
United States Marshals Service
United States Secret Service
Office of Inspector General – Various Agencies

Criminal investigations do not need to be initiated by a federal agency to be handled by a federal court. Often state investigations involving weapons violations, drug crimes, computer crimes, and white collar crimes such as mortgage fraud, healthcare fraud, tax fraud, conspiracy, banking fraud, securities fraud, bankruptcy fraud, and environmental crimes, end up in the federal courts.
